My photo coasters are laminated on 4" x 4" Masonite panels, which are sealed with wood floor finish that will render them very water resistant. The bottom of the coaster is held off the table by a layer of black felt. The photo is laminated, so it will hold up very well, like a restaurant menu. I have sold nearly 16,000 coasters over the past ten years, and have had about one hundred returns. Thus I will guarantee any coaster - if one fails, send the coaster base back in the mail and I will make another for you. You will only have to pay for the postage to me and back.
In general, try to keep coasters out of the rain or snow, or lose them in the sink, or let your dog chew them. Otherwise they should be fine. When I have tested them by trying to destroy them (leaving the coasters in the sink for a few days), the funny thing is that the felt will eventually fall off, the Masonite will warp, but the laminated photo will still be perfectly fine.
And by the way, just because they are coasters does not preclude them wall display. A couple of 1/2" Velcro squares will do. The tooth Velcro will hold onto the felt, and the adhesive will hold onto the wall. Any possible damage to your paint is still better than a nail hole. These images show an installation in my bathroom - the coasters are pristine after five years of bathroom humidity.
